NTNU Nanolab: A Cross-Disciplinary Research Initiative Application for advanced scientific equipment

Tildelt: kr 18,7 mill.

NTNU is the foremost contributor to technological higher education and basic research in Norway. In line with this it is important to be an active participant within nanotechnology. NTNU covers all relevant disciplines: biology, physics, chemistry, medica l technology, material science and technology, and electronics. NTNU also recruits scientifically strong students both at the master and PhD level. Together, these aspects will give NTNU an advantage in the establishment of a national initiative within na notechnology. To facilitate research within the area of Nanotechnology, NTNU Nanolab is currently in the process of establishing appropriate infrastructure. To support this important area of research and education, the board of NTNU decided the 15th of M arch 2005 to support the refurbishment of adequate buildings and construction of new clean rooms with up to 145MNOK until 2007, S-sak30/05. The laboratory will be a shared facility open for all researchers at the university and collaborating institutions interested in nanotechnology. As suggested by Ebbesen et al., NTNU Nanolab will focus on four prioritized areas: * Nanoelectronics, nanophotonics and nanomagnetics * Nanostructured materials * Bionanotechnology * Nanotechnology for energy and the envir onment NTNU Nanolab will include ~300m2 clean room area dedicated to nanostructuring and synthesis by chemical and physical methods. Additionally, a laboratory for synthesis of biological nanomaterials will be established. The total lab area, including c haracterization laboratories and offices etc will be ~1700m2. All laboratories will be located in the same vicinity in order to facilitate mutual exchange and interaction between the different disciplines. At steady state it is foreseen that 24 PhD stude nts and 8 post-docs will have their activity mainly within NTNU Nanolab. Moreover, the laboratory will be open for master-students in order for them to get adequate training within this fast moving field.
