Ecosystem dynamics under influence of natural and human drivers

Tildelt: kr 20,0 mill.

This research programme is designed to examine a number of critical questions for understanding the structure and function of alpine and boreal ecosystems under natural dynamics and the influence of human-induced land use and climate change. The purpose i s to develop a more solid basis for prediction of human effects on biodiversity and ecosystem services, as well as to further develop NINA?s ability to conduct large-scale, integrative ecosystem research, in order to meet current and future challenges for ecosystem management. This will be accomplished by establishing a coordi-nated research programme focused on 1-2 common study areas, with an emphasis on community dynamics in a landscape perspective and integrative modelling. The programme will respond t o the research needs of the Ministry of Environment, as well as the challenges presented by the Millen-nium Ecosystem Assessment and the Millennium Goal of halting biodiversity loss by 2010.
