National Identity in Contemporary Norway: The cultural politics of immigration and integration

Tildelt: kr 0,11 mill.

As a doctoral candidate in the Social Anthropology Ph.D. program of Harvard University, I am applying for a Leiv Eiriksson Mobility Grant to support a 10-month research stay in Norway beginning in August 2006. The purpose of my stay will be to participat e as a guest, Ph.D. student researcher with the strategic research program, Cultural Complexity in the New Norway (Culcom), which is under the direction of Professor Thomas Hylland Eriksen, Department of Social Anthropology, at the University of Oslo. Cu lcom, begun in 2004, is a new research program involving the faculties of Humanities, Law, Social Sciences, Theology, and Education. My research examines the ways in which both national and new immigrant identities are constructed within the context of r ecent waves of transnational migration, deterritorialization, and the rapid expansion of advanced capitalism. I am particularly interested in studying this situation in countries where social democratic principles and belief in justice, equality and the sanctity of human rights and "decency" are historically well established in order to see what happens to these principles as immigrants and nations encounter each other. Based on ethnographic research in Norway conducted July 2005 - June 2006, I will use a Leiv Eiriksson Mobility grant to return to Norway in August 2006 to conduct archival research, survey my data and write the doctoral dissertation. The opportunity to work with Culcom researchers in Norway will be an invaluable resource. A grant from the Research Council of Norway will enable me to do archival research and textual analysis in the libraries of the University of Oslo, share and receive feedback on my fieldwork findings during regular participation in Culcom research seminars, and collab orate with Prof. Eriksen and other researchers engaged in similar projects.
