Oestrus and oestrus behaviour in NRF and Holstein breeds in modern cattle housing systems

Tildelt: kr 2,1 mill.

Good health and fertility are crucial for animal welfare, production efficiency and sustainability in milk and beef production. In the NFR breed, these traits have been selected for over time, thus expanding the distribution of this breed worldwide. Expor t of semen and animals is very important, both for GENO and for Norwegian farmers. In order to achieve high reproductive efficiency in NRF cows bred in other countries, oestrus detection and AI at the optimum time of oestrus, is essential. Therefore, desc ription and documentation of oestrus symptoms, and comparison of these symptoms with those expressed by other breeds and crossbreeds of NRF, is necessary. Knowledge about behaviour and oestrus symptoms in modern cattle housing systems is limited. During t he project, methods for efficient detection of oestrus will be developed and a theoretical basis for improvement of breeding results based on AI will be generated by characterizing and comparing oestrus symptoms in NRF, Holsteins and crossbred cows. The m ain goal will be achieved by monitoring the behaviour of dairy cows in modern free stall housing systems in Norway and Ireland, using video surveillance combined with pedometers, light meters and hormone analyses. From these observations both oestrus symp toms and the duration of these symptoms will be determined. Oestrus expression and the manner of recognising oestrus symptoms in cows in free stall housing are expected to differ from those in stable boxes. Differences concerning oestrus expression and op timal timing of AI are also expected between breeds. Additionally this project focuses on relationships between social behaviour and oestrus, and how social behaviour interferes with oestrus and oestrus expression, both in individual animals and in groups of animals. The knowledge generated in this project will provide a significant basis for future technological innovation related to efficient detection of oestrus, and thus optimal reproductive efficiency.
