The objective of the project is to develop methodology and technology for real-time economical optimization of complex industrial processing plants, consisting of continuous, semi-batch or batch process units. Physical/chemical nonlinear dynamic models wi ll be used both for model predictive control of individual process units and for overall economical optimization of a total process plant. The total system is integrated such that the model used for the economical optimization is consistent with the model s used for control of the individual process units. This approach is anticipated to have clear advantages with respect to achieving true economically optimal process operation, compared to the state-of-the-art technology. Typical economic benefits are re lated to production volumes, consumption of energy and raw materials, product quality and reproducibility and product yields. The main R&D challenges are related to methods and tools for efficient generation of process models, numerical methods for large scale optimization and estimation, system integration and development of specific applications. The technology will be generally applicable to a wide range of industrial processes. In the project it will be applied to several industrial processes operat ed by the participating process companies.
