Norsk COSI - Co-development using inner and Open source in Software Intensive products

Tildelt: kr 8,2 mill.

Norsk COSI will be part of the ITEA project COSI. Co-operation with European industry and academia will give the Norwegian participants valuable experience and access to results which it would be impossible to achieve on our own. The Norwegian project pa rtners are IKT-Norge, NTNU, eZ systems, Keymind and Linpro. R&D CHALLENGES From a previous, industrial survey in Europe, we know that roughly half of all European software projects make use of OSS components, and that the use of OSS products is increasin g quickly. Evans Data Corporation data says that 56% of developers use OSS products in 2005, while they were only 38% in 2003. Industrial use of e.g. OSS components poses new challenges related to component evaluation, -selection, and -integration, and with consequences for the overall development process (waterfall or incremental). There are currently no experience-based and customizable guidelines for OSS. Handling of OSS needs to be integrated in revised development processes and business models. RE SULTS Norsk COSI will enable ICT vendors to understand when and how to use OSS. Norsk COSI will provide validated guidelines and processes for the handling of OSS. EXPLOITATION Norsk COSI will enable the Norwegian ICT sector to fully exploit OSS. The No rwegian ICT sector had a turnover of 168,7 billion NOK in 2003. In 2004 the Norwegian ICT sector employed 7,4 per cent of the total labour force in Norway and accounted for 11 per cent of total turnover in the service sector. Norsk COSI targets the entire ICT sector and has the potential for major economic effects.
