Persistent Pollutants in Rivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Tildelt: kr 3,1 mill.

The objective of the project is to conduct a survey on water, fish and sediments focussed on persistent pollutants in major river basins in Bosnia and Herzegovina and to establish a screening laboratory for important persistent organic pollutants in Saraj evo. The Neretva and Bosna rivers, the largest in Bosnia and Herzegovina and water resources of major importance in the country, are selected for case studies in the project. No survey of environmental quality or water quality of considerable extent has b een undertaken since before the war (latest data are from 1991) and there is now an urgent need to conduct an environmental survey on the environmental quality of the river basins. The survey will focus on persistent pollutants since very little data exis t and potential pollution sources are identified, and as the more ?classical? pollutants are taken care of in other projects (including a major international GEF-funded project). The project work will include sampling of water, sediments and fish and subsequent screening for selected persistent pollutants. A screening laboratory will be established and competence in conducting such surveys and appropriate laboratory procedures transferred from Norway to Bosnia and Herzegovina. In cases where the scree ning show elevated concentration levels, further chemical analyses will be conducted. Equipment for quantitative analyses is expensive and does not exist in Bosnia and Herzegovina at time being. Hence, establishing a cost-effective screening laboratory wi ll provide the possibility of conducting more local surveys. Selected samples can then be analysed quantitatively in a Norwegian or other international laboratory.
