NA - The fate of longrange transported nitrogen in soils and freshwaters and its interaction with the carbon cycle in natural ecosystems

Tildelt: kr 70 000

Understanding interactions between the nitrogen and carbon cycle in natural ecosystems is a prerequisite for predicting effects of N deposition on freshwater quality and on forest C sequestration under a changing climate. Studying and modeling effects of nitrogen deposition and climate change on freshwater quality is a priority in NIVA?s research strategy. Here, we apply for support for establishment of new cooperation on this theme between Dr. H.A. de Wit (NIVA, Norway) and Dr. C.L. Goodale (Cornell Univ ersity, USA). Currently, models that describe biogeochemical pathways of N in terrestrial ecosystems incorporate key pathways and processes but are inadequate to give reliable predictions in future changes in leaching of N into freshwaters in a changed c limate. A better simulation of soil C dynamics and a better description of increased N availability on carbon accumulation are identified areas for improvement. Dr. Goodale has great expertise in modeling N cycles in forests, on C sequestration and with e xperimental work on C and N cycles in natural ecosystems. N and C cycles under climate change are mentioned as key research themes in the Norklima Research Programme under the Norwegian Research Council (2004-2013) and the report on ?Knowledge requirement 2005-2009 of the Ministry of Environment? (Ministry of Environment, 2005). The cooperation will consist of mutual visits. Dr. Goodale will participate in a planned Norwegian workshop on C and N cycles. This new joint cooperation will lead to new proposa ls for joint projects applied for at the Norwegian Research Council, EU research programmes and/or US research programmes.
