Kina - Cooperation between Shanghai Jiao Tong Univ.(SJTU) and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) within Gas Technology

Tildelt: kr 0,15 mill.

Initial talks between the parties interested in gas technology were held in Shanghai late October 2005 during the visit of the NTNU Rector delegation. Natural gas is going to be an important energy source in the Shanghai region, based on imported LNG and gas pipeline from North West China. Why SJTU has developed a substantial activity on gas technology. Norway on the other hand has large resources of natural gas, why NTNU have been able to build up large research programs and established a Gas Technolog y Center together with SINTEF. Both China and Norway could gain by a long term strategic cooperation within selected areas of natural gas technology to develop solutions that may be useful for the Chinese market. The Norwegian companies Statoil and Hydro may be interested in such a cooperation. During our visit we identified the following possible research areas: *LNG technology *Gas engine development *Gas driven combined cooling, heating and power production (integrated hybrid systems) *CO2 technology i.e. utilize CO2 as working fluid in heat pumps/refrigeration To develop plans for joint research programs we will arrange joint workshops at SJTU and NTNU where selected professors and experts from the different areas may meet and plan together the est ablishment of long term research cooperation, including preparation of applications for joint projects that may attract Chinese, Norwegian and EU funding. The joint projects within the programme should involve paired doctor students (and maybe also indu strial projects), and they shall be carried out with exchange of researchers, doctor students and master students, and by organizing seminars and workshops with industrial partners to create arenas for product development and innovation. This project is a part of the international strategy of the Thematic Strategic Area "Energy and Petroleum - Resources and Environment" that may be found in the attachment.
