Background: NKVTS was tasked by the Directorate of Health and Social Affairs to carry out a research programme on disaster-related issues in the aftermath of the desember 2004 Tsunami. The research programme consists of 8 projects of which one encompasse s 2.900 Norwegian citizens exposed to the Tsunami. The study of that population is the basis for the current application. The 2.900 exposed Norwegians were mailed an extensive questionnaire 6 months post disaster. The current study is a longitudinal prosp ective follow-up-study of the approximately 900 respondents. Preliminary findings of disaster exposure and psychological traumatisation are reported in the enclosed research protocol. Aim of the current study: To investigate long-term mental health con sequences of disaster exposure and identify predictors for severe mental health problems. Methods: A combined questionnaire and interview study will be conducted 18 months post disaster. Main variables will consist of traumatic exposure and loss, disast er behaviour, social support, coping, and mental health. Publications: Publications will focus on prevalence of severe and long-term mental health problems in disaster exposed, predictors for severe and long-term mental health problems, and validity of s elf-report screening instruments. The results from this study may guide preventive measures when disaster strikes the population in the future.
