Promoting healthy weight among school children

Tildelt: kr 5,9 mill.

Increasing rates of overweight and obesity is seen as a major public health problem. In Norway, the prevalence of overweight and obesity among school children has increased during the past decade. While the aetiology of obesity is not fully understood, ch ildren are seen as key target groups for public health efforts to prevent overweight and obesity. Recent literature reviews demonstrate that as of today there is no strong evidence-base for making recommendations for such prevention strategies. The overal l goal of this project is to design, implement and evaluate a comprehensive, intervention program to promote healthy weight development (i.e. reduced rates of overweight and obesity, as well as reduced rates of unwarranted dieting and eating disorders) am ong young adolescent school children (11-13 year olds). The program will be developed based on a thorough analysis of social determinants of healthy weight development and of modifiable factors at the individual level, within the family, at school and wit hin local community environments. The study consists of a one-year pilot phase where intervention strategies and research instruments will be developed and pilot-tested, followed by a two-year experimental intervention study. Interventions strategies inc lude the school-policy level with respect to food and physical activity, educational programs, computer tailoring, family involvement, school health services and youth organizations and leisure time activities. A large number of schools in Østfold and Ves tfold counties will be invited to participate in the study and randomly assigned to an intervention or a control group. Participating pupils will be asked to complete extensive surveys (web-based) at baseline and at 1-year and 2-year follow-up surveys. He ight, weight and waste circumference will be measured. Parallel surveys will be conducted with one parent per child.
