Context-sensitive systems for mobile communication in hospitals

Tildelt: kr 4,6 mill.

This project will focus on context-sensitive interfaces, middleware, and new interaction forms for mobile devices that support multi-modal communication in hospitals. Such devices will support media such as voice services, text-messaging and paging in an efficient and non-interruptive manner as well as enable support for individual and role-based contact on a single device so that users may, for example, contact someone assigned "on-call" duties at a specific department, even if they do not know who that person is. Currently similar devices are not generally available in hospitals. Mobile communication systems for hospitals is an important research area because hospitals are noted to suffer from poor communication practices with mobile communication t echnology being recommended as one potential remedy. In addition, preliminary studies have shown benefits for both mobile voice and text services during use in hospitals. Research in the project will be conducted in three phases, which are constructed in order to ensure that users are involved as much as possible in designing and evaluating the systems targeted by the project. User participation is a crucial aspect of this project since over half of medical informatics systems fail because of user and st aff resistance. The three phases are observations & interviews, scenarios, and prototyping & effect studies. The approaches will be used in a complimentary and iterative fashion. The total project budget is 4.6 MNOK. The main cost in the budget is rela ted to funding for one PhD student and one PostDoc position. Remaining costs are for equipement, travel and project management expenses.
