This project proposal is collaboration between MISON AS and the research group in Trondheim at SINTEF, NTNU and St Olavs University Hospital. Minimally invasive therapy is now increasing in the health sector due to improved patient treatment and faster re covery of the patient. By using ultrasound as intraoperative imaging and navigation technology, it is possible to perform better minimal invasive procedures more accurately for more patients. However, this requires considerably R&D efforts with relatively high risk. The major R&D challenges are to obtain satisfying ultrasound image quality in new clinical applications and to establish sufficient technological solutions for new clinical applications. Main objectives are to improve image quality, interpre tation and exploitation of ultrasound imaging, establish an accurate and user-friendly interface suitable for new clinical applications based on user demands, market entry of at least 3 product improvements towards existing market, 3 products into new mar ket segments as well as increased scientific publication and education. These objectives will be sought solved through 3 work processes: WP1: Requirements for new clinical applications, WP2: Optimized 3D ultrasound for new clinical applications, WP3: Lowe ring the threshold for entering new clinical areas. The project meet these challenges by research and development in exploitation of ultrasound imaging capabilities as well as by research on advanced multimodal display technology. The project will deliver a PhD in 2010, product realizations of research results in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and relevant scientific papers anually throughout the project period,. Solving the technological barriers related to introduction of SonoWand into new clinical applications (e .g. Spinal cord surgery) is considered a major benefit for ultrasound based intraoperative imaging as well as for patients. Results established in this project are estimated to expand the SonoWand market with 25%.
