Polar cap plasma patches are localized regions of high density plasma, seen drifting in an anti-sunward direction over the polar cap. They are seen moving poleward into the polar cap on the dayside, moving across the central polar cap, and emerging from t he polar cap into the nightside auroral oval. We intend to study the formation mechanisms for patches, track patches out of the polar cap and into the nightside auroral oval, and study the reconnection rate - both magnetopause and tail reconnection. We in tend to do this using much of the infrastructure for space physics research both on Svalbard and mainland Norway. These include the EISCAT Svalbard and mainland radars, and ground-based optical instrumentation at Svalbard and mainland Norway. For the rev ised proposal, we will also undertake a modelling effort of plasma patches using a reduced version of the French-developed coupled kinetic/fluid TRANSCAR model. We will make calculations of the 630.0 nm [OI] airglow emissions, using inputs from satellites , radars and optics. The project is a close cooperation between the University Centre on Svalbard, the Univ. of Oslo, Air Force Research Laboratory, AFOSR, Virginia, USA and our contacts at Laboratiore de Planetologie de Grenoble, France. We apply for fu nding for regular observations, ground-based campaigns, and 50% funding for a PhD position.
