Geografi:

We want to build a viable research group in statistical and mathematical modelling of infectious disease. We wish to make important original contributions to statistical methodology for analysis on infectious disease data, for the further purpose of aidin g, monitoring and understanding the spread of infections in human populations, identification of vaccination strategies, and giving informed advice to assist public health policy. Since there are very few researchers with a mathematical background workin g in this field in Norway, a major aim is to recruit new researchers, especially young people into the field. Furthermore, we want to invite guest researchers in statistical and mathematical infectious disease modelling for shorter or longer stays. Our ai m is to build a Norwegian research group in this area that can have top scientific competence, and also react fast if needed to give advice to the health authorities. In particular we shall study the difference between Norway and other countries as regar ds the potential for spread of pandemic disease. This is part of larger international effort to study the extent to which the basic reproduction rate is virus dependent and to which extent it is dependent on social relationships and contacts. We shall a lso study network models for infectious disease as a continuation of an ongoing project in the group. Network models are a new, and very promising tool for studying epidemics.
