Characterization of Novel Amphiphilic Polymer Systems.

To gain a fundamental insight into temperature responsive polymer systems, we plan to carry out an extensive investigation on some novel thermoresponsive polymers. This project consists of three parts: 1. Shear-rate dependency of inter- and intramolecula r interactions in dilute solutions of amphiphilic polymers. 2. Characterization of new amphiphilic thermo-sensitive block copolymers. 3. Interaction between hydrophobically modified polymers and polycyclodextrins. In the first part, we want to address th e very important issue in polymer science, namely to understand the delicate interplay between intramolecular- intermolecular associations in amphiphilic polymer systems. By using different shear rates, the influence of intra or interpolymer interactions in the association process can be tuned. In the second part, we plan to investigate some completely new thermoresponsive copolymers. Our preliminary studies reveal that these polymers exhibit some unique conformational-transition features. In the third part, we will study how the network strength can be tuned by the formation of bridges between adjacent polymer chains through some novel polycyclodextrin compounds. The possibility of forming polycyclodextrin bridges between colloidal particles (flocculat ion) with absorbed polymer brushes will also be investigated. This project will be carried out in cooperation with international established scientists in Norway, Sweden, and Spain. Both experimental and simulation studies with be carried out in the proj ect to gain a deeper understanding og the phenomena.
