Barriers to entry, internationalisation and technology (BITE)

Tildelt: kr 5,4 mill.

According to technology-based perspectives, innovation and technology flows are the fundamental determinants of development and growth. According to new trade theory and the economic geography approach, however, industrial development is to a larger exten t shaped by market forces. The point of departure for this project is that both perspectives are right, but at the same time also erroneous since they do not properly account for the other. In the project, the purpose is therefore to bridge the gap betwee n the two approaches, as a step towards an integrated framework for research and policy discussion in the field. This will be made in the form of three sub-projects: (1) A first project studies how technology affects entry barriers in international market s, by studying export performance at the firm level. (2) A second sub-project examines the interplay between technology, market structure and internationalisation at the sectoral level. An ambition is to provide a better taxonomy of industrial structure a nd industry performance, including manufacturing as well as services. (3) The third sub-project investigates the role of technology spillovers for industrial development and growth, in particular whether technology spillovers are national or international in scope. In the project, important components will be (i) capacity building through a Ph.D. project linked to the activity of senior researchers, (ii) international cooperation and disemination of results, including an international workshop; (iii) to d erive the implications of the research findings for technology, trade and industrial policy.
