Facilitating entrepreneurial spin-off processes within universities -research-based new firm formation

Tildelt: kr 2,7 mill.

The goal of this project is to better understand how the initiation and early development of research-based new ventures can be facilitated. Three research questions will be addressed: What are the resources used and the outcomes from university initiativ es to facilitate the formation of spin-off ventures? How does the process of research-based spin-off formation unfold? How can the formation of research-based spin-off ventures be facilitated in the university context? The theoretical basis for this proje ct is within entrepreneurship research. The creation of a spin-off is seen as an entrepreneurial process where individuals, opportunities, context, and the process over time are key elements. Theories from the study of organizational change and innovation processes will be incorporated to emphasize the role of the organizational context and the process over time. New venture creation from academic institutions involves particular challenges compared to entrepreneurship in general because of the many actor s involved and their often unclear objectives. A combination of quantitative and qualitative data from the Nordic countries will be collected and analyzed together with data from similar studies in other countries. The current state of spin-off activities at Nordic universities will be investigated through a survey of the major research universities. In-depth case studies will be used to map spin-off processes as they evolve within a university setting. Additional cases from research institutes and corpor ate research departments will be used to compare how entrepreneurial processes are influenced by different contexts. This project will add theoretical grounding to the existing and mainly descriptive spin-off literature, but also to the understanding of e ntrepreneurial processes in general. The findings will be important to policy makers and innovation support actors in prioritizing the significant amount of resources allocated to research commercialization support.
