Seedling quality and establishment routines for rapid growth start of Abies nordmanniana and Abies lasiocarpa for Christmas tree production

Tildelt: kr 2,9 mill.

The production of quality Christmas trees are demanding and customers pay well only for high quality trees. One of the most crucial factors is the plant materials used and the establishment routines. Today, the average fraction of Christmas trees sold amo unts to only 50 percent of those planted. Increasingly the portion of trees sold will contribute to a substantial better economy for the producers. A proper planting date and establishments routines will further contribute to develop a vigorous Christmas tree producing industry. A substantial part of the Christmas trees sold in Norway today are imported, mainly from Denmark. Also, seedlings for establishing Christmas tree plantations are to a great extent imported. More of this value ought to be generate d in the rural parts of Norway. The overall aim of the proposed project is to improve the knowledge basis for a production system for optimal plant quality and establishment routines for Christmas tree production by identifying optimal morphological and p hysiological quality criteria for the seedlings. Knowledge on how planting time and site conditions affect the establishment phase will also be studied. Experiments will be established both under regulated climatic conditions and as field experiments. A p roduction programme for Abies seedlings will be established, linking optimal quality criteria with production methods and key economic factors, such as production costs, production time and tree quality.
