Tildelt: kr 2,7 mill.

The main objective of this project is to amend knowledge about how small scale rural tourism can expand through innovation and improved organisation. Research questions: 1: Identify how innovation is understood and interpreted among small scale rural tourism firms? What kind of innovation occurs and what are the sources? 2: What critical factors for co-operation on innovation in small scale rural tourism can be identified, and in what way are they critical? 3: What efforts can improve innovation and development in rural tourism, especially efforts that can improve organisation and co-operation? We are going to carry out an in-depth case study of about 5 cooperation/network established for increase value added in small rural tourism enterprises. In addition, to generalise statistically from the project, we will conduct a survey among 500 small rural toruism firms in Norway to gain more knowledge about innovation in small rural tourism firms. There will be established a reference group of users where 5 meetings will be arranged during the project period. For key firms and actors participating in our cases, discussions for strategies and organisational models will be available both at firm level and at regional level. Implementation may improve co-op eration and increase the rate of innovation. Improving co-operation and innovation at first hand, will hopefully as a next step improve competitive advantages and value added in firms. Many of the results from this project will be of analytical and genera l character, i.e. with potential for transferring the application to other small rural tourism firms all over the country. The results will also be of great value for the support system and make them able to direct their support more effectively toward sm all tourism enterprises with expansion ambitions.
