As a measure to avoid the spreading of fish and shellfish diseases, a defined distance is required between all aquaculture facilities. From 2006, this requirement was also implemented for intermediate live storing of fish. The established distance regulat ions represent a clear limitation to the establishment of new aquaculture sites and the entrapment of wild fish. Dispersal of disease might be a result of a number of underlying factors, where both vertical and horizontal transmission mechanisms might act . The picture becomes even more complicated when "new" species are introduced in fish farming areas, or when wild fish are caught for catch-based aquaculture. There is presently a need to evaluate the current management model, to obtain more knowledge on disease dispersal and establish new, improved modelling tools. Horizontal disease transmission by the water masses is dependent on survival of the pathogen under the present environmental condition, dilution and water movement. The project aims at the dev elopment and improvement of models describing the movements of pathogens, implementing available information about key pathogens in marine aquaculture. The project will evaluate the possibilities of combining different modelling tools, and deliver data th at may optimise use of coastal areas for marine aquaculture activities.
