The load of herbicides on Norwegian cereals fields is unnecessarily high. The spraying represents an unnecessary cost for farmers, in Norway estimated to about 20 millions NOK yearly, and lots of herbicides superfluously spread to the environment. The mos t important reason for this excessive herbicide use in cereals is that farmers do not possess technology able to sort out areas with low weed density that not need spraying, or only at very reduced doses. By image analyses, available data power and swift transfer of data it is possible to make equipment that detects the weeds, verifies if the infestation is damaging or not, and gives signals about spraying decision to the sprayer on-the-go. Bioforsk, Sintef and Adigo AS work on developing an integrated we ed sensor and spray decision unit capable of detecting harmful weed infestations and transmitting decision to turn the sprayer on and off as the spraying vehicle passes into or out of areas with weed infestations that exceeds the economical weed damage th reshold. Dimensions Agri Technologies (DAT) aims to develop this system into a commercial product, but before the integrated unit can be put into commercial production, the need for research is substantial. The challenge is to obtain information for relia ble spraying decisions to an acceptable cost. The activities in this project will be to make available and automatically analyse image samples from cereal fields to develop operational, robust machine-vision based weed damage thresholds and recommend conf iguration of the integrated unit (number of cameras per sprayer boom (section) width and distance to sample in the driving direction). The project will develop new and improved image analysis algorithms to identify the most harmful weed species. The image sampling will be accomplished with an autonomous vehicle on cereal fields with variable spatial distributions in the weed infestation.
