The Second Home Phenomenon and New Rural Conflicts Implications for Policies for a Rural 'Part-Time' Repopulation, dr.gr.stip.

Tildelt: kr 4,0 mill.

The project is organised into four work packages, each focusing on one of the research questions outlined above: WP1: Second-home sprawl: Using quantitative data, this unit will describe the general features of contemporary development of the second-hom e phenomenon in rural Norway, with particular emphasis on coastal areas, which have previously received little attention. WP2: Second homes and 'part-time' rural-to-urban migration (PhD grant, sociology/geography): This sub-project addresses how second homes may be perceived as 'part-time' rural-to-urban migration and investigates the construction of new identities following the influx of urban people into rural areas, and the conflicts that arise from the intensified interface between rural and urban p opulations. WP3: 'Hytteliv' Urban people's conception of life in second homes: This will be a smaller WP, studying urban life in rural settings by analysing the magazine 'Hytteliv' ('Cabin Life'). Only running expenses are applied for to implement this WP. WP4: The social construction of 'rurality', 'locals', and 'urban people': Another smaller WP, comparing the constructions of rurality held by second-home users and rural people, and how this influences the development / resolution of conflicts betwe en groups in relation to land use. The project also involves networking activities, including further development of existing co-operation between Norwegian and US partners
