Overseas research grant application for the PhD-student, Hanne Digre, connected to the project etisk slakting av hvitfisk (p.nr. 164715/40

Tildelt: kr 0,32 mill.

PhD student and research scientist, Hanne Digre, SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture, intends to spend the academic year 2007/2008 as a guest scientist at Crop & Food Research, New Zealand (6 months) and Wageningen IMARES, Netherlands (6 months). The PhD-stu dent is currently linked to the project "Establishing an ethical, standardized slaughter line for white fish (NFR project no. 164715/S40)", financed through the program "Aquaculture and production of aquatic organisms" 2005-2007. The stays at the two rese arch institutes, Crop & Food Research and IMARES, will create knowledge at a high international level in the areas fish welfare, stress and product quality related to (a) capture and catch handling at sea, and in aquaculture, (b) to harvesting practice s. The most important research topics will be to study the effects of live fish handling, transport and slaughtering on behavior, stress levels and ultimately, the product quality. The overall goal of the project "establishing an ethical, standardized sla ughter line for white fish" is to propose a processing line "from sea to packing of bled, gutted cod in ice". Major issues are: fish welfare, maintaining optimal product quality by rested harvesting, efficient bleeding procedure and effective chilling. As fish welfare already is, and will be even more in the future, a major concern for the industry, it is clear that the technology used must promote adequate fish welfare. Gentle peri-mortem handling practices, including rapid sedation or killing, have bee n shown to have several positive effects on product quality. IMARES in Netherlands is one of the leading international research institutes within the fields of fish welfare and slaughtering, while Crop & Food Research, NZ, have their expertise in seafood harvesting systems and technologies. A closer collaboration with these two institutes will definitely be an asset to our current project, the PhD student as well as for SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture.
