Competence Project for Conceptual Design Methods for Complex, Customized Ship

Tildelt: kr 16,0 mill.

One of the main competitive advantages of the Norwegian maritime industry today is our ability to develop and deliver complex, customized ships with high quality and short lead times to the global market. To maintain and further strengthen this position, we need to be best-in-class to develop and exploit new technologies, methods and processes for supporting vessel design and deliveries. The project aims at further developing a strong competence base at NTNU related to the use of advanced methods and tech nologies in the conceptual and project development phases of the ship design process. For the next 3 to 10 years, we consider such competence to be of vital strategic interest both for the research and education taking place at Department of Marine Techno logy, NTNU, and for the competitive position and future recruitment of the Norwegian shipbuilding industry. More specifically, the project will develop competence and methods related to: - analysis and optimization in conceptual design, with emphasis on t he early assessment of producibility, cost, operability, robustness and risk. - ship conceptual design optimization within the context of a fleet and/or transport system, with emphasis on availability, utilization and robustness under seasonal route varia tions (e.g. due to ice) and continuous production - product platforms, work processes and best engineering practices to reduce the time and effort spent in tender design package development from request to delivery, focusing on parametric and configurati on-based conceptual design methods. - identifying key design drivers and simplified design representations (response surfaces) from large, complex design models, with focus on assessing performance differentials (what-if) rather than absolute performance levels - the efficient exploitation of data embedded in existing databases to support design decisions and provide input to tendering documentation.
