Polyolefines (POs) is the most used group of polymers and will continue to be so for many decades, because of their versatility, low price, good processability, and ease of recycling. Norway has a strong domestic market pull for new innovative PO products within demanding areas, such as the oil and gas sector. Exploitation of oil and gas resources in regions with cold climate, at large sub-sea depths or in high temperature and pressure reservoirs requires a high level of innovation for PO based products f or both on- and off-shore applications. This project addresses specific needs for innovation, with focus on thermally isolated pipe systems and electrical power cables and umbilicals, where PO based materials constitute an important part of the product. The industrial partners are two international corporations with head offices abroad but with strategically important Norwegian based activity (both production and R&D). They operate on different marked segments; one international leading supplier of high voltage power and telecom cables and one is a producer of complete thermal insulated pipe solutions to the oil and gas industry. In addition one of Europe's leading producers of POs is supporting the project financially. Each company builds their internat ional competitiveness on long term technological leadership that is based on a fundamental understanding of the performance of materials and their products. Within their markets related to oil and gas exploitation, new fields at large sub-sea depths, pos e demanding challenges to technological solution and material properties. Tackling these challenges is the focus of this project. A prerequisite for this is enhancement in competence all the way from PO materials, additives for in properties, via process technology, to innovative technological solutions. The scientific focus will be on developing new knowledge and experimental methods related to process controll, morphology development and material performance.
