Privacy Enhancing Technology (PET) for Web based Services

Tildelt: kr 1,2 mill.

2007 - 2007

The goal of the Privacy Enhancing Technology for Web-based Services PETweb project is to enable communicating organisations to include privacy enhancing technologies (PETs) in large-scale web-based services for the general public and customers. The motiv ation for PETweb has two parts. Privacy challenges from the technologies used in new web-based services, and the need for such services to comply with privacy rules and legislation. The technological challenges stem from increased network communication an d increased availability and duplication of data due to lower cost of storage. Furthermore, increased networking has led to the ease integration of services that aggregate and correlate data from different sources. This leads to new privacy challenges. Tr aditional methods of privacy protection, including access control, are not sufficient for privacy protection in these new services. Therefore, there is a need for practical privacy enhancing technologies that scale to large data volumes and comply with le gislation. PETweb will not build technology, but make a framework that facilitates the development of next-generation PETs in large-scale web-based services. This consists of analysing the requirements of communicating organizations that use PETs in thei r large-scale web-based services, analysing and identifying gaps and hindrances to the use of PETs and performing a case study to validate the results using the Norwegian flagship service MinSide with all Norwegians as potential users. The project partner s comprise all parts of the value chain in such a service offering. The PETweb project will deliver specifications of and processes for the types of privacy-enabling technologies required in new large-scale services; understanding of how next-generation PETs can be incorporated in the design, development and deployment of these services; theory and general principles for realising and applying these PETs; and a platform on which further projects may be built
