Japan - The mineralogy of indium - case studies in Norway and Japan

Japan is a resource hungry nation. There is currently a huge demand from Japanese industry for indium (In) for applications in electrodes of liquid crystal display for TVs and mobile telephones, as well as for Sc and heavy REE (the latter specifically for the magnets used in the engines of hybrid cars. Indium is generally obtained as a by-product of the mining of zinc sulphide minerals from hydrothermal vein deposits. Using the combined expertise of its participants - and the large possibilities offered by established mineral collections in both countries, the project is designed to evaluate the distribution and mineralogy of indium in selected Norwegian ore deposits, and to compare the data with mineralogical data from the relatively better-studied loca lities in Japan (Toyoha, Ikuno, Akenobe, Ashio, Nishizawa - all polymetallic, xenothermal vein deposits). The project will incorporate field work as well as laboratory analysis in both countries. Emphasis will be placed on exchange of technical know-how between the Norwegian and Japanese participants. Both parties will therefore participate in the two phases of field work (in Norway and Japan) and analytical work (scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, X-ray diffraction) will be car ried out parallel in the two countries. We aim to provide preliminary data on the distribution of In in mineral deposits, with application worldwide, and doing so, to strengthen ties between Norway and Japan in the field of ore mineralogy. We will apply i n subsequent years for funding for new projects in the field which will involve PhD and postdoctoral researchers.
