Modelling Transport in Porous Media over Multiple Scales

Tildelt: kr 9,0 mill.

Flow in porous media governs important physical processes such as oil and gas recovery, groundwater management and carbon dioxide storage. Most porous media of interest are highly heterogeneous, with small scale flow paths dominating the overall displacem ent. The current project aims at developing an integrated approach for upscaling and numerical solution of multi-phase transport over multiple scales. This will be achieved by bridging together the fields of numerical upscaling and numerical linear alge bra, thus framing numerical upscaling methods as special cases of multi-grid solvers. By formulating the system such that mass conservation is observed at all scales, we allow for trade-offs between computational efficiency and accuracy of results. The ultimate goal of the problem is thus the creation of a truly multiscale simulation tool, which dynamically distributes the computational power between upscaling and numerical solution methods to obtain the best possible representation of the flow field wi thin a given computational limit.
