USA, advancing research on climate change impacts on high-latitude terrestrial ecosystems.

Tildelt: kr 0,10 mill.

A high priority for Bioforsk is the study of climate change effects on high-latitude terrestrial ecosystems; especially in terms of greenhouse gas fluxes and soil responses. Reasons for such an emphasis are scientific, environmental and societal. High-la titude regions are expected to experience a climate warming twice as severe as the rest of the world. While global climate changes are only in their infancy, major modifications of the carbon cycle of high-latitude terrestrial ecosystems have already been observed. Bioforsk has strong assets for developing this research such as the Svanhovd centre near Kirkenes, and motivated scientists with the relevant expertise. Collaboration with the US scientists and Institutions will greatly support our current efforts to developing research on climate change impacts on artic terrestrial ecosystems. In particular, we want to build on previous contacts to develop new projects. Here we propose to develop state-of-the-art gas flux measurement systems in collaborat ion with the Trace Gas Biogeochemistry Laboratory at the University of California at Berkley and with the CO2 laboratory of the Smithsonian Institution in Maryland (Dr Drake). We also want to renew collaboration with the Terrestrial Soil Carbon Laboratory , headed by Dr Smucker, at Michigan State University to develop new projects on below-ground C storage and cycling in terrestrial artic ecosystems. At last, we want to benefit from the experience of Dr Smucker (heavily involved in the Long-Term Ecological Research Network) and Dr. Drake (who runs the world?s longest CO2 enrichment experiment) in developing a field research site appropriate for long-term ecological and biogeochemical research in the Norwegian artic. The development of these projects will b e conducted in concert with the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and NILU, and Russian institutions (see parallel proposals Monitor and Carbon).
