Canada- bilateral research cooperation on integration of weather and biological data with bioclimatic models for use in plant protection

Tildelt: kr 0,15 mill.

The background of the project is the increasing complexity of the models used in plant protection and the input data to the models. Both institutions involved are dealing with the development, implementation, and delivery of bioclimatic models for use in agriculture. The data administration consists of doing the measurements, gathering the data and testing the quality; storing the data and putting the sets of data in an intelligent way into models; and then running the models. In the modern world these processes can be performed in real time and in forecasted time when regional weather forecasts are coupled with observed data. The project is aiming to get resources to implement a new system for data administration and data integration. A number of them es will be considered to get additional resources for practical implementation. The idea is to use some of the resources to visit the respective research sites. A few persons from Canada visit Norway and one or a few persons from Norway visit Canada. Du ring these visits, the delegates will be able to discuss the common research interests in more details, and to look at software demonstrations, to study approaches in data management, bioclimatic modeling, and timely agricultural information delivery sy stems. They will then prepare the formal research proposals for future collaboration. The project leader in Norway is Tor Håkon Sivertsen(PhD). The leader in Canadian is Gaétan Bourgeois(PhD). And an important additional issue in the future will be to f ind the scope of the models, because the models in the different fields of science have to be used only inside their scope. Collaboration between the two countries will facilitate the extension of respective expertise in North America and Europe Furtherm ore there are gains for the institutions: - Share expertise will accelerate research progress in both countries - Acquisition of datasets in both countries will improve the evaluation of models.
