Folate and fatty acids in early life and neurodevelopmental disorders: developmental language delay as an early marker

Tildelt: kr 5,2 mill.

We intend to study the relationship between intake of folate and fatty acids during early life and the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders (ND) such as autism and attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Having language problems at the age of three is a strong predictor for neurodevelopmental disorders. Therefore, language delay (LD) is our primary outcome. We will use two designs. For 50,000 children included in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, we will estimate the risk of LD acco rding to the following exposures: maternal intake of folate and fatty acids during pregnancy; the childs intake of folate and fatty acids during the first year of life; maternal intake of folic acid antagonists during pregancy. In a nested case-parent s tudy from the same cohort we will analyse vitamins, metabolites and triad genes in the folate metabolic pathway with the aim to elucidate the interaction between folate and fatty acid intake and maternal and child genotypes on the risk of LD. The analyses will be corrected for confounding variables such as diet, use of tobacco and alcohol in pregnancy and socioeconomic status.
