Hommage à Iver Jåks

Tildelt: kr 49 999

Iver Jåks is the most recognised sami artist living in Norway. His work is highly regarded not only in a sami context but also within the Norwegian art society in general. The latter was confirmed in 1998, when Jåks' work was presented in a retrospective exhibition at The museum of modern art in Oslo. Jåks' art has distinctive qualities. One could say that it places itself between traditional sami craft and modern art in the western tradition. His sami background is present in most of his work at the sam e time as the stereotypical forms and motives often seen in representations of sami culture is avoided. It is among the clichés of the art world to claim that an artist breaks new ground. Still, the idiom feels appropriate confronted with Jåks' art. Impo rtant aspects of Jåks' work are change and transitoriness. Wood and reindeer antlers is important materials in his sculptures, organic materials that over time disintegrates. This means that his artworks changes over time, and that the process of change a nd disintegration itself becomes part of the work. By his choice of materials and way of using them his art make references both to traditional craft among the sami and to ecological processes in nature. His work is influenced both by culture and nature i n the polar region. The exhibition Hommage à Iver Jåks will celebrate Iver Jåks' 75th birthday anniversary in 2007. Professional artists from all of Norway will be invited to submit one artwork, that reflects upon Iver Jåks' work. In addition to beeing a celebration of Jåks himself, an important idea behind curating this exhibition is achieving artistic exploration and investigation of themes and ideas that are central in Jåks' work.
