Zeolites are microporous minerals with the potential for utilization in novel applications, i.e. zeolite membranes. This project is a collaboration between the research groups led by professors Lillerud at University of Oslo (OU), Norway and Hedlund at Lu leå University of Technology (LTU), Sweden. Professor Lillerud is main applicant and project leader and professor Hedlund is willing to contribute to the project and to host a PhD student working in the project. The two groups have great and complementary competence in zeolite synthesis, film growth, and applications for zeolites (catalysis, membranes, adsorption etc) and modeling, which all are very important for the proposed Ph.D. project. The Ph.D. student will visit both groups frequently, and spend m ost of the time at LTU. The most critical R&D challenges are to prepare small membranes with high permeance and sufficient selectivity. After scale up, such membranes could be used for CO2 separation from natural gas in industrial processes, e.g. oil plat forms. The key is successfully preparation of a very thin, yet continuous layer of zeolite crystals on top of a porous support. It is important that zeolite crystals do not grow into the support. During the course of the project, several types of zeolites and modifications will be tested. For a successful outcome of the project, it is necessary to obtain fundamental understanding of the parameters such as adsorption, diffusion and defects etc, that are controlling selectivity and permeance in these membra nes.
