VANN: Management of wild Atlantic salmon and escaped farmed salmon: Economic drivers, impacts and conflicts. (Other rel. subject: Samfunn)

Tildelt: kr 3,0 mill.

Escaped farmed salmon has a number of well-known negative biological effects on the wild Atlantic salmon stock (Salmo salar), but also some potential positive effects as it may increase the salmon stock available for both marine and recreational fishing. The aim of this project is to analyse such biological and economic externalities induced by the farmed salmon industry and to reveal the basic principles for a sound management strategy of the wild Atlantic salmon. First, a bioeconomic model will be devel oped where both the fish farming industry and the salmon recreational (and the marine) fishing sector are included. Next, the various values and costs involved in the utilisation of wild salmon will be assessed and it will be studied how these values are affected by escaped farmed salmon. Both collected data through stated preferences analysis and market data for fishing permits will be applied.
