CORE Organic Minimising medicine use in organic dairy herds through animal health and welfare planning - ANIPLAN

Tildelt: kr 0,94 mill.

A calf welfare plan will be based on the "Organic Cow Comfort Plan" (developed by Bioforsk Økologisk), as well as an ongoing project at the National Veterinary Institute ("Stockmanship and the human-animal relationship: Its effect on the health and welfar e of dairy calves and young stock") and "God'kalven-prosjektet" (Helsetjenesten for storfe). Knowledge and experiences from other European countries will be retrieved from the CORE Organic research group, in particular during a workshop on calf health and welfare assessment. This workshop with invited speakers will be held in Norway as a departure point for the project. Some selected parameters for welfare assessment may also be tested and evaluated in some other countries. The calf welfare plan will cons ists of check-points including both animal and resource based parameters and a plan to follow up the registrations. The calf welfare check-list will be tested out at five pilot farms and discussed by farmers, veterinarians, dairy supervisors and ethologis ts. A final design of the check-list will be suggested and the most promising assessments should be carried out at approx. 50 farms in Norway and abroad. Good practice as well as improvement points should be summarized in a calf welfare plan at fram level , and the results from the on-farm testing will be discussed in advisory and farmer groups. Based on the experiences from the on-farm testing, the check-list design will be finalised and guidelines for rearing calves in organic dairy production will be es tablished.
