MATPROG-Matprogrammet: Norsk mat fra sjø og land

Potential of the European blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) for cultivation and industrial exploitation in Norway.

Tildelt: kr 7,0 mill.

To day there are no industrial exploitation of the European blueberry (EB) in Norway, in contradiction to the highly exploited lowbush blueberry of Canada. However, the EB have a much higher content of biological compounds important for human health (ant ioxidants etc.). In addition it is regarded as more aromatic than the lowbush blueberry. Therefore, the EB are more demanded on the Norwegian, and on the world, market. This project focuses on the potential for industrial exploitation of blueberries by experiments partly based on Canadian cultivation and receiving experiences on the lowbush blueberry. This include examinations of halfcultivation on forest land including clear cutting of forest, periodical cutting of blueberry plants, fertilization and w ater management, effect of mycorhiza and of competition with weeds and under wood. Growth and development of blueberry on farm land will be examined in a minor scale to demonstrate an eventual potential for production, and additionally superior clones wil l be regionally adapted and effective propagation methods will be sought. It will also be examined how the blueberry react on climatic parameters, by controlled experiments in phytotrone/exp. greenh. and fields at different geographical sites. Harvestin g will be optimized by motorized walk-behind and hand pulled harvesting equipment. Berries will be rinsed traditionally (air) for subsequent freezing and processing by the business partners. The fruit will be sold at different markets; National distributi on (Tine AB), local markets (Bærgården "Viltost fra Snåsa"), shops and through pharmaceutical industry (Biolink Group AS). In addition scenarios will be developed in comparison with the processing industry (Tine AB and Røra AS), on how the EB industry in Norway can compete with imported berries. The results will be disseminated through seminars, work shops, symposiums, press releases, articles in growers magazines, technical protocols and scientific articles
