Transient kinetic studies (SSITKA) of catalytic reactions

Steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA) has proved to be a powerful technique for studying heterogeneously catalyzed reactions. SSITKA combines steady-state and transient techniques provided that no isotopic effects occur. The technique allows determination of the true turnover frequency of the active site decoupled from the site coverage. By steady-state experiments only the product of the rate constant and the site coverage is determined. From the analysis of experimental SSITKA data only average rate constants can be determined. However, the application of more sophisticated approaches can yield reactivity distributions based on the measured transients. The reactivity distribution can give important information of the active surface The present proposal deals with the use of the steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA) to study surface reactions. Initially, the focus will be on hydrogenation of CO on supported Co catalysts by switching between 12CO and 13CO. It is also proposed to expand the transient studies to include partial oxidation of methane or ethane using labelled oxygen In this case the reactivity of surface oxygen can be determined.
