Corroles as functional materials

Tildelt: kr 7,9 mill.

This is a collaborative project between two groups at the University of Tromsø, led by Professors Abhik Ghosh and Kenneth Ruud, and will comprise both an experimental and a theoretical component. On the experimental side, our studies will involve the syn thesis of a variety of metallocorroles, to be investigated as (a) NLO materials and (b) liquid crystals. The latter will involve corroles with multiple long-chain alkyl, alkoxy and perfluoroalkylmethyl substituents. (c) We will also investigate metallocor roles as sensors of NOx and other volatile organics. On the theoretical side, the project will focus on NLO properties as well as on metallocorrole-mediated NOx sensing. A key goal is that state-of-the-art methods development work in the Ruud group are b rought to bear on the applications pursued in the Ghosh laboratory. The project will involve two PhD students and two postdocs for 3 years each. Collaborations are envisaged with other groups in Europe, the US, and Canada, as well as New Zealand and Sout h Africa, among other places. A visiting fellowship is sought for Dr. Daniel Crawford (Virgina Tech, USA) as well as a CTCC associate professor II position for Dr. Jeanet Conradie (University of the Free State, South Africa). Because of reduced funding compared to the original application, we will not pursue the solar energy conversion subproject as part of this project.
