The proposed preproject is directed towards developing a new production furnace for solar cells for UMOE Solar. Industrial partners in the project are UMOE Solar and Moser Baer Photo Voltaic Limited (India) in cooperation with the research institutes Nati onal Physics Lab (India) and SINTEF Materials and Chemistry. The primary objective of the project is to develop an optical casting method and cell processing for Up Graded Metallurgical Solar Grade Silicon (UGM-Si). Furnaces available commercially are de signed and used to make solar cells from poly-Si (high cost "Siemens" process). There is a need to understand crystallization and design furnaces such that the low cost UMG-Si could be crystallized to segregate impurities effectively to make solar cells w ith efficiency equal to or higher compared to poly-Si. The project will be divided into two sub-projects, where the first will include the production of ingots for wafering and the second will include slicing, wafering, solar cell production and testing.
