Cultivated V kotschyana and C tinctorium, can they replace wild ones in products against gastric ulcer in Mali to retain the biodiversity?

Tildelt: kr 4,7 mill.

Vernonia kotschyana and Cochlospermum tinctorium are of special interest since they are used against gastric ulcer in Mali and they form parts of formulations frequently used against gastric ulcer registered as Improved Traditional Medicines (Gastrocedal) A large proportion of the population of Mali suffer from this ailment, and it is of interest for the health department of Mali, with Department of Traditional Medicine as the active part, to ensure availability of secure medicines based on the Malian re sources against gastric ulcer. The main objectives are structure/activity determinations of bioactive sites of the polysaccharides from Malian anti-ulcer plants coupled with animal studies of the bioactive polymers and cultivation of those plants. The res earch will focus on the conditions necessary for cultivating plants that can replace those collected from Nature.Structural studies coupled with bioassays will be performed in order to pinpoint the bioactive sites of the molecules and ensure that these ar e the same in the material both for the wild samplesand the cultivated ones.
