Fish is an important source of protein worldwide. Ensuring that the fish sold is sustainably produced is in focus from producer organisations, retailers and consumers. Development and implementation of certification schemes is considered as one tool to he lp towards a more sustainable aquaculture production. Traceability systems and certification can link information relevant to the different stakeholders in the production chain. Guidelines will need to be developed that define, for example, what acceptabl e levels of water quality and minimal ecological impact mean in practical terms. The limits and measurement parameters may differ in the various types of aquaculture practices. Integrating the measurement of water quality and traceability of quality and s afety attributes into a practical management system are essential components in developing sustainable aquaculture production. The project will use water management as an example of the integration of best practice parameters into a producer friendly mana gement system. Traceability systems will required for effective control of sustainability factors. The project will build upon results of EU projects (Consensus, Tracefish) and other international initiatives ( FAO, GlobalGap, WWF) The aim is not to devel op a certification or traceability systems, but to determine what parameters need to be incorporated and how to integrate these into a management system. At present, more than 70 percent of the world's aquaculture output is from China. For a sustainable a quaculture certification scheme to have a global effect it will have to applicable in China, as well as elsewhere. Possible partners from Chinese universities and research institutes that have cooperation with Chinese aquaculture producers have been ident ified. The project will secure partners in China, Norway, Japan and EU partners with interests in water testing and treatment systems, aquaculture management systems as well as traceability solutions
