Cultural perspectives on mental health in Northern Troms

Tildelt: kr 3,8 mill.

This project seeks to develop, implement and study a culturally sensitive treatment approach within a multi-cultural region of Northern Norway. The approach will be developed in association with the treatment institution and a cross-diciplinary team. The essence of the approach is that the patients own strategies for healing and symptom reduction will be included as a part of the treatment plan developed in cooperation between the patient and the therapist. These strategies are expected to include a wide range of initiatives such as physical exercise, use of nature, art, diet, spiritual approaches, self-help groups, use of traditional and complementary healers etc. The effects of this intervention on therapeutic relationship, continued use of self-help i nitiatives and overall outcome will be evaluated in a long term follow up study of five years. The control group will be a historic control. Integrated within the study will also be data collection on patients self-help initiatives and treatment approache s outside psychiatric therapy and the correspondence between socio-cultural factors and alliance. In the collection of data, the most relevant psychometric tools will be used. We have a close cooperation with the National Center for Research in Compleme ntary and Alternative medicine (NAFKAM) who have developed relevant tools for mapping the use of self-help and complementary therapies. They are also leading a cross-diciplinary group of national researchers in the field of Tradtional healing, DYNAMI-TM, which this project is a part of. The DYNAMI-TM project will be applying for funding this year through the FOLKEHELSE program. This project application includes a list of the researchers throughout Norway, and their associated international partners, of w hich we are a part of.
