From biomass to biogas - an integrated approach towards sustainable recovery of energy and nutrients

Tildelt: kr 16,8 mill.

There is a desperate need for efficient, environmentally friendly, integrated technologies for conversion of biomass, in particular recalcitrant lignocellulosic biomass, to energy. One of the most promising biomass-derived energy-carriers is biogas. Biog as production leads to relatively high energy production per acre of land, and biogas plants tend to be flexible, i.e. they can often handle different types of biomass. To obtain optimal biogas yields, pretreatments of the feedstock are important, in part icular for lignocellulose-rich recalcitrant materials. In this project we will study integrated conversion technologies for various types of feedstocks and mixtures thereof, the ultimate goal being efficient production of biogas. We will study thermal pre treatment technology in close collaboration with developers of process equipment. Enzyme technology will be investigated and developed, exploring scenarios varying between a scenario that separates the feedstock into a sugar stream (for e.g. bioethanol) a nd a stream for anaerobic digestion (biogas production; anaerobic digestion) and a scenario where enzymes are used to improve anaerobic digestion of the complete, no-separated feed-stock. Anaerobic digestion will be studied in much detail at various scale s. A set-up for rapid testing of many conditions (type of feedstock, type of thermal and enzyme pretreatment, type of inoculum, parameters related to the anaerobic digestion process itself) will be built up. Finally, to ensure sustainability and integrate d use of the complete feedstock, we will have focus on (1) water recycling and challenges associated with that, and on (2) the composition, properties and applications of the organic co-product. Here the aim is to use the organic co-product for soil impro vement, thus contributing to production of new biomass. As part of this project we will build up a close strategic collaborative network with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
