Research, social resources and health promotive interventions among young refugees

Tildelt: kr 2,5 mill.

There is a discrepancy between the needs for mental health services among refugees and the utilization of these services. Therefore, the overarching goal is to learn more about how refugees make use of social resources for the well-being of their children . One objective is to investigate the roles of individuals within the social networks of refugees for the positive mental health of refugee children. Another objective is to investigate how research processes may become a social resource within refugee co mmunities. A third objective is to contribute to the theoretical development of our knowledge on coping strategies and resilience among children and adolescents. Many groups of refugees are subject to a number of research projects. Yet, we know little a bout the roles of these researchers and projects within refugee social environments. Therefore, the study will follow and document ongoing research projects within Tamil communities in Oslo and Bergen. The findings may complement the traditional empirical focus on coping strategies among individuals, or within demarcated groups such as the family. Hence, the originality of the study is found in its methodological focus on social networks, rather than employing a community study method. Consequently, the s tudy will also provide more knowledge on the role of both immigrant- and host agencies in health promotive interventions outside public health services. Specifically, the study will enable us to learn more about the influences of research projects on rese arch subjects. The findings will be implemented in the planning of psychosocial interventions within the Tamil community directed towards refugee children.
