COMPLEX SYSTEMS AND SOFT MATERIALS

Tildelt: kr 12,2 mill.

Nano-scale complexity in materials is a vast field and includes a wide range of systems across many scientific disciplines. We concentrate here on project areas where integrated efforts can bring the activity beyond the state-of-the-art and reach a world- leading level. We have selected a set of 3 topics where there are strong and well-defined interests from the point of view of both fundamental science and practical applications. Moreover, within these topics there is at present significant competence amo ng the participants [2-7]. The 3 focused subprojects we present here are: Nanostructured materials, Nanostructured surfaces, Nanofluidics Firstly, we wish to focus our studies on interactions and self-assembled structures of nanoparticle systems in 3 d imensions based on mastering of nano-scale behaviour at the level of single nano-particle physical properties. Secondly we wish study collective nanostructuring in confined environments such as near surfaces, inside droplets and inside nanoporous media. N anostructuring and self assembly often, but not always, involves fluid particle interactions, so finally we will include dedicated nanofluidics projects in the "package", including projects related to bionanomachines, drug delivery and micro-rheology. Bel ow follows descriptions of the projects, including strategic needs, research needs, challenges and main goals viewed from basic and applied perspectives.
