Perception of transport risk in France and Norway

Tildelt: kr 0,77 mill.

The project is in accordance with the Norwegian programme RISIT and the French research programme PREDIT with a common objective to provide a better understanding of transport risk perception, in order to improve safety and risk management within the tran sport sector. It is also in accordance with the aim of ERA-NET 13, which is to lead to a comprehensive cooperation between researchers, policy makers and operators between European countries, as it happens, Norway and France. The current project gives a contribution to the ERA-NET 13 interest on safety and security in transport, by providing an increased knowledge about users and "professionals" feeling of safety and security on different modes of transports. More, it will give the opportunity to compare risk perception between two different countries and allow us to know whether the so called "cultural factor" is still operating within a European territory which is getting economically and socially more and more homogeneous. The project will comprise the following analysis: " Risk perception and transport behavioural adaptations (e.g., travelling on another time than planned, taking another route than intended, being more careful/aware when travelling, refrain from travelling etc. Importantly, these behavioural adaptation will be investigated in relation to risk perception and perceived control only - not other factors such as cost, availability etc.). " Comparison of risk perception between experts (operators) and users (lay people). " Comparison o f risk perception related to safety versus security issues " Risk perception, mode choice, and mobility. That is, the influence of risk perception relative to other relevant factors such as cost, availability, comfort, delays etc. that are assumed to infl uence mode choice and mobility. " Media's dealing with transport risks, both on a regular "daily" basis and related to large scale accidents. " Comparison between objective and subjective risk All the results from the project will be used as a basis for giving recommendations about management of crisis according to perceived risk. This topic will not be subject to specific empirical investigations, but final and mid-time workshops aimed at addressing this issue will be conducted, and a report will be fo rmulated based on a synthesis of the results and the workshops. The project will be carried out as a common research project between TØI and NTNU/SINTEF in Norway and two research groups at INRETS. For the purpose of clarity we will call the TØI-INRETS (LPC/DEST) consortium for "The TOI-INRETS team", and the NTNU/SINTEF-INRETS/LVMT consortium for "The SINTEF-LVMT team".
