WP1 Emission reduction measures: - in service performance: The revised Annex VI was adopted by IMO at MEPC 58 (10 October 2008). The revised annex introduces new NOx limits for new and existing ships. This work package is about evaluating solutions for N Ox reductions. WP2 Environmental reporting, benchmarking and communication: Shipping companies are increasingly evaluated on their environmental performance and also increasingly asked to provide information on the environmental impact of their activit ies. Presently, several initiatives for standardization of reporting methodology is being developed. It appears that ships will soon need to implement routines for reporting emissions in a standardized fashion. Advantages include benefits derived from pub lic and customer relations on one hand and in the long term, improved performance through benchmarking. WP3 Energy efficiency improvements The bottom line for all the measuring and reporting issues is the achievement of emissions reductions. Increasing efficiency is the primary means of reducing CO2 emissions and also fuel costs which is of significant importance for the competitiveness of ship-owners. Increased energy efficiency also contributes to reduction of other exhaust gas pollutants. This work package is about how to increase efficiency and reduce emissions through more efficient operation and upgrading existing ships. WP4 Future fuels / Alternative means of compliance The revised Annex VI which was adopted by IMO at MEPC 58 states that equiv alent measures may be used as an alternative to use of low sulfur fuels. The attractiveness of alternative solutions depends on the abatement technologies themselves and on the properties of the future low sulfur fuels. A key point in this activity is to assess what future 'Global distillate' fuel may be in terms of composition and physical characteristics, and to investigate PM characteristics from heavy fuel oil and 'global distillates'.
