Improved sub-salt and sub-basalt imaging by joint inversion of seismic, gravity, magnetic and electromagnetic data

Tildelt: kr 6,7 mill.

Oil and gas exploration in increasingly challenging regions requires improved imaging technology. This project aims at developing a new joint inversion technology, suitable for the imaging of challenging settings, such as sub-salt and sub-basalt areas. T he joint inversion will integrate seismic, gravity, magnetic and CSEM data in an objective way, exploiting the individual advantages of each method. The resulting models (seismic velocity, density, susceptibility, and resistivity) will be consistent with all data sets, consistent with each other, and consistent with a priori information. The coupling of the individual models during the joint inversion is a crucial point and will be realized by a structural approach, which encourages common structural feat ures in the different models but does not enforce them. This takes into account that the individual data sets sample the same subsurface structure, but are sensitive to different and possibly unrelated physical properties. During the development of the m ethod, special emphasis will be given to the stability, sensitivity and resolution. The joint inversion will be applied to real data, e.g. the salt structures in the Nordkapp Basin (Barents Sea) or the sub-basalt setting of the Møre Margin. The joint inv ersion will be applied to a real data set from a region difficult to image by individual techniques, e.g., the salt structures in the Nordkapp Basin (Barents Sea) or the sub-basalt setting of the Møre Margin.
