Chemical biology (CB) involves use of small molecules to perturb and study biological function. Small molecular compounds (SMC) with molecular weight below 500 Da have proven extremely important to explore function at the molecular, cellular, and in vivo level and for treating diseases. Most medicines marketed today are from this class. It is a challenge to identify SMC effective at modulating a given biological process or disease state. Currently, systematic high-throughput screening (HTS) of tens or hun dreds of thousands of small molecules is typically used to find a successful match between a chemical and its target. Capacity for HTS has been built within the big pharma sector for drug development, but similar HTS resources have not been available to S MEs or the academic sector due to costs, lack of competence and IPR issues. However, based on changes in the state-of-the-art, it is now timely to introduce and make chemical biology available for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the biotech s ector and for academically derived commercialization projects. Specifically, use of chemical biology and high throughput screening should be made available because: i. New strategies for fast development of SMC tools such as agonist/antagonists are needed as characterization of new gene products accelerates. ii. SMEs and academically based commercialization projects do not get access to pharmaceutical companies CB platforms and SMC libraries due to their IPR policy to protect SMC ownership. iii. The possi bility to increase value of new drug targets by providing proof of principle with model compounds developed under a CB platform should be exploited. iv. Competition from US, Canada, China, Japan and central Europe on CB HTS must be met for Norwegian SMEs to be at the forefront. The CB unit aims to meet need to develop competence both in academia and SMEs, and train specialized personnel with expertise in HTS which is required for the future growth in this area
